The OCTANE Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) System is a new tool for fuel retailers and other business owners who want to reduce the number of “drive-offs”, serial fail-to-pay customers and shop-lifters. The key to the number plate recognition system is that it is linked to a national database of previous offenders and stolen number plates. As a vehicle approaches the protected area, its number plate is automatically scanned by special day/night cameras with infra-red illuminators and checked against the national database. In the event of a match, an alert is flashed to the site operator’s ANPR terminal before the vehicle has even arrived at the pump. At this point the pump can be shut down until pre-payment is made and any outstanding debt settled. The presence of the automatic number plate recognition system and the national database can be made known to new unable-to-pay customers to ensure prompt payment of the outstanding debt.
The point-of-sale video display of the number plate recognition system in action attracts constant customer interest and evidences a high level of security at the site. As it is specifically aimed at combating forecourt crime, the OCTANE ANPR system allows fuel retailers to enjoy the benefits of number plate recognition without the high costs associated with other systems of this type.
